Make a full traditional skekler guising costume from locally grown Shetland aet straw.
Maurice Henderson will lead this class where you will make the straw skeklers hat, top and skirt, all set for the winter guising season at Christmas and New Year, or for any occasion that guising is required.
The making of the skekler costume is a great introduction to traditional straw crafts and you will learn, or be able to use, techniques for kishie making.
The skekler tradition (grøleks in Unst) also incorporates Shetland fiddle music and dance. There will be a chance to try out the costumes with the old fiddle tune ‘Skeklers’ and have a fun with the Shetland reel.
Please note, if you are unable to attend all 8 classes you will have learned the techniques to complete the skekler suit in your own time and will be able to catch up.
